Really Annoying: Laptop Keyboard With a Few Bad Keys

October 13th, 2012

Well, this is annoying… my MacBook keyboard has started to go flaky, with several keys no longer working… the “” key, the “” key, and the “” key. Don’t see them? Dooh! I can’t type them, silly! :-)

One of the regrettable side effects of Apple’s exceedingly-compact, dense designs is that repair/replacement of parts can be “challenging”, to phrase it kindly, and the keyboard is a good example: a key is “repaired” by disassembling almost the entire main body and replacing the whole keyboard assembly.

I’ve got the “AppleCare” extended warranty so I can get it fixed plenty easily, nevertheless still a hassle, especially since the problem appeared at the start of a three-day weekend. (Monday is the “Respect for the Aged” holiday in Japan.) The day after that, I’ll take the laptop to the repair place and hope it’s something they can do on site, knowing I’ll probably lose the laptop for a week or more. :-(

So, we’ll probably see zero posts on my blog for a while, except that perhaps this will be motivation for me to finally clean my office desk to the point that I can access my MacPro (my desktop Mac). These days, I normally do all my work with my laptop while reclining in a big soft La-Z-Boy, so my desk has grown to be a vast wasteland of random debris piled in layers over time. If I clean, I’ll be astonished if I don’t find a fossil or two.

I will soothe the pain this evening by (yet again) drowning myself in beef and beer at the great BBQ/Beer garden feast at the hotel next to the (oddly-named) Qanat Mall, as I’ve written of several times.

PS: if my prose on this post seems a bit stilted this time, it’s owing to the fact that I can’t type the letter “” (again, I can’t type it!), so I’ve had to find alternative ways to phrase things. Which letter? That’s for the reader to decipher. :-) Here’s a hint: this post has every letter except the one I can’t type.

Here’s another hint: to write this post while avoiding the letter that my keyboard rejects, I had to often refer to my thesars.

External Laptop Keyboard

September 22nd, 2012

External Laptop Keyboard

My young brother has bought a new computer keyboard for his laptop. At the first, I was confused why he got an extra keyboard. Later, I had the answer. For he works in the campus office, and his laptop always stay at the office. But he types a lot. That made his dell 6000 Keyboard out of burden. Some keys switched to retirement. Then he chose to get an external keyboard. On the one side, it can save certain money. On the other hand, external keyboard is stable than the one itself.

Once you work in a fixed location with your notebook computer like home, office or other place, its better to have an external laptop keyboard. Usually, desktop requires an external one to prolong the time of our laptop, while, an external keyboard is a good way to save money for a broken laptop keyboard.

To have a look of the priceof Compaq NX6115 Keyboard, Gateway 8011381R Keyboard, and HP 441541-001 Keyboard, its obvious that they are more than 50 dollars and even higher of the original one. What if it got broken again? Every time I type on the keyboard, I am too sensitive to hit strongly. As to the computer keyboard, I have no such worry. Then how to select an external laptop keyboard? USB interface is essential as far as my concern. Generally, the USB interface can be seen on the side of laptop. And its easy to set keyboard with a USB interface. The current keyboard products are not all are used USB interface. There are a large number of PS/2 interface computer keyboards.

So we should make it clear while we buy an external keyboard. Second, the size of laptop keyboard should be taken into account. The exact size can have a better sense while hit the keys. Not like compaq NX6105 Keyboard, its so vulnerable to play games.

Its not so difficult to select one for your notebook. And I have made my mind to get an external one to release my laptop keyboard. I will have a try and hope share more information with you later.

How to Replace a keyboard for Gateway Laptop Keyboard

September 22nd, 2012

How to Replace a keyboard for Gateway Laptop Keyboard

Visit the Gateway support document website and locate the “User’s Guide” section of the listings for your laptop model. You should be able to locate either a “component replacement manual,” or a document focusing specifically on replacement of the Gateway Laptop Keyboard for that model (as different models of keyboards have slightly different methods of removing the keyboard.) You may also wish to check the FAQ’s in the support documents of your model, as they may also contain information on replacing the keyboard.
* 2
Power down your Gateway laptop and remove the battery. This will not only ensure that you don’t accidentally damage your laptop by powering it up while working on its components, but may also be necessary to reach the mounting screws for your laptop’s keyboard. Press the power button once after the battery has been removed to discharge any remaining electricity that the laptop may have stored.
* 3
Consult the support documents for your Gateway laptop model and find out where the keyboard mounting screws are located. There will most likely be between two and five screws, depending on the specific model of laptop that you own. You may be required to remove the keyboard bezel (the strip of plastic that runs along the top of the keyboard) in order to reach some or all of the screws; this can be done either by sliding the bezel off to the right of the laptop or by simply lifting it off once loosened (though you may need to use a coin or flat-head screwdriver to detach clips or pry the bezel out of its resting location.)
* 4
Remove the screws holding the Gateway Laptop Keyboard in place.

The screws will either be located on the bottom of the laptop (under the space that the battery occupies) or beneath the keyboard bezel. Put the screws in a safe place where they will not be lost, since you will need to use them to secure the new keyboard.
* 5
Lift the keyboard up from the bottom, detaching the keyboard connector and pulling the keyboard itself free from the Gateway laptop, then setting it aside. You may need to once again use a coin or flat-head screwdriver in order to depress clips which might be holding the keyboard in place.)
* 6
Plug your new keyboard into the keyboard connector, then carefully place it back into the space previously occupied by your old Gateway Laptop Keyboard . If the keyboard is designed to be held in place by clips, press down with sufficient pressure to clip the keyboard into place.
* 7
Replace the screws that you had previously removed from the Gateway laptop. Make sure that the screws are firmly in place both to ensure that the keyboard is secure and also to eliminate any potential problems with replacing the bezel or battery.
* 8
Reattach the bezel (if you removed it) and the laptop battery, making sure that all components have been reattached and are firmly secured. Once the battery is back in place, press the power button to power up the Gateway laptop and give your operating system a chance to recognize the newly-installed keyboard.

How to Clean the Laptop Keyboard

June 15th, 2012

It’s a good idea to clean your laptop keyboard regularly. However, to avoid damaging it, there are some things you need to keep in mind when you are removing dust and particles, or cleaning the keys.

Every so often, you can use a vacuum to clean your laptop keyboard. Use the little portable vacuums, with either the tiny (toothbrush-size) brush or the upholstery-cleaning attachment. This effectively sucks up all the crud in the keyboard. It’s amazing to watch.

Some people prefer to clean the keyboard by using a can of compressed air. This is not recommended, because the air can blow the crud in your keyboard further inside the laptop. Instead, use a vacuum.

Remember to have the computer turned off when you do this!

To clean the tops of the keys, use isopropyl alcohol. Soak it up into a soft, dust-free cloth, or use a cotton swab and gently rub the key tops. Try not to drip any alcohol inside the keyboard, and never use a spray cleaner directly on the keyboard.

In addition to cleaning your keyboard regularly, you should also consider washing your hands from time to time.

Laptop Keyboard Not Working

June 15th, 2012
Having trouble typing on your laptop keyboard? Read this article which will help you in troubleshooting your laptop’s keyboard problems.

Laptop keyboards are a little more delicate than keyboards used in desktop computers. Hence they face more problems. Normally, they are replaced when they render defective. However, most of these keyboard issues can be taken care of or even prevented by regular cleaning. Common issues like, keys not working on your keyboard, having to press keys firmly to get the output or any keyboard typing issues, can easily be handled at home.

Problem #1 – My Laptop’s Keyboard Keys are Not Working

Sometimes you may find certain keys of your laptop’s keyboard to not be working properly. You type those keys but there is no output on the screen or you need to press these keys firmly to get a result. You face this problem if you accidentally spill any liquid substance on your keyboard, or due to dust accumulating on the inside of the keys, pressing certain keys really hard while playing games or even due to absence of lubrication. Therefore you are supposed to maintain your laptop’s keyboard by cleaning and lubricating it regularly.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. To start with, take out each key. Use a small screwdriver to carefully pry each key by making it loose. As they become loose, keys will simply pop off. Also, take out the rubber piece present under every key. Keep the keys and rubber pieces in different containers.
  2. Once you have removed all keys from the keyboard, you will have to clean the keyboard from the inside. Use cotton swabs or ear bubs and slightly dip them in water. Avoid getting them too moist, as excess water can damage the keyboard. Meticulously clean the whole keyboard using moist cotton swabs, laying extra emphasis on key spaces.
  3. Now, start cleaning keys you had earlier removed and kept in the container. Use foam rubber and lighter fluid to clean each key alone. This will help in removing any sticky substance present on keys. Apply any household cleaner on these keys and let them stay for about 15 minutes. After this, wash all the keys properly using hot water and let the keys dry completely.
  4. The small rubber pieces which you took out earlier and kept in the container have to be thoroughly rinsed in warm water, after you have sprayed a household cleaner on them. Soak these rubber pieces up in paper napkins so that they dry quickly.
  5. To lubricate the keys, place all keys (facing top-down) on a flat surface. Apply mild lubricant from all sides, on all keys and leave them to dry. Avoid applying too much lubricant instead go for a light coat.
  6. Similar to the manner in which you lubricated the keys, apply mild lubricant on the keyboard surface and let it dry.
  7. Once you have cleaned and lubricated all the parts, carefully reassemble the keyboard. Begin with placing all rubber components on the keyboard. Next, fix all keys in their respective positions cautiously securing the wire in these keys. Use your finger and press down all keys, one at a time, firmly so that they fit properly in the slots. That is it.

The complete process will take you a maximum of 2 hours. Cleaning and lubricating the keyboard in the above prescribed manner once a year, can prevent many such situations.

Problem#2 – My Laptop’s Keyboard Types Wrong Characters

When your keyboard types wrong characters, it is because of a software problem and not a hardware one. If you accidentally press specific keys on your keyboard, it can activate a particular function responsible for the problem.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Select the control panel option
  2. Click on → ‘Regional and Language Services’ → ‘Languages’ → ‘Details’ → ‘Key Settings’
  3. Choose the option ‘Switch Between Input Languages’ and click on ‘Change Key Sequence’
  4. Make sure that all the check boxes in the window are unchecked and repeat the same for ‘Switch to….. (Keyboard Type)’
  5. Click →’Ok’ → ‘Ok’ → ‘Apply’ → ‘Ok’.
Problem#3 – My Laptop’s Keyboard Types Numbers Instead of Letters

This is another problem due to some software issue. It is possible you may have enabled a digital lock unknowingly.

Troubleshooting Steps

Pressing the ‘Function’ key along with the ‘Num lock’ key (Fn + Numlock) or press the ‘Function’ Key along with the ‘Shift’ and ‘Num Lock’ key (Fn +Shift + NumLock). This will disable the lock and consequently solve your problem.

This was all about solving your laptop keyboard problems that you can try out yourself. After trying all the above given options, if you still find the keyboard still not working, you will have to take your laptop to a service center to get it repaired.

Computer Keyboard Cleaning

June 15th, 2012

Benefits:Cleaning your computer keyboard will not only result in sticky-free keys but also ensure that your keyboard will continue to function properly by removing dirt, dust and other particles that can damage the keyboard’s circuits.

Cleaning the Keyboard
1. Unplug the keyboard and turn it upside down and shake to remove and dust/dirt/crumbs that may be stuck in the keyboard. (It is advised that you do this outside or over a garbage can.)

2. Take a can of compressed air and spray in between and around keys while holding the keyboard upside down to remove any remaining unwanted particles. (You can use the soft brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner and vacuum out the junk instead of using a can of compressed air.)

3. Wrap a cotton cloth or paper towel around your pointer finger and moisten it with a mild cleaning agent or rubbing alcohol and use it to clean the top of the keys. (Be careful to not add too much liquid or else it may drip into the spaces between the keys and damage the circuits.)

4. Take a cotton swab and moisten it with a mild cleaning agent or rubbing alcohol. Use this to clean in between the spaces of the keys.

5. Let your keyboard dry and plug it back into the computer.

Spills: If you spill a liquid onto your keyboard (or laptop), disconnect the keyboard (or remove the batteries in a wireless keyboard), turn it upside down and shake it gently to get as much liquid out of the keyboard as you can. With the keyboard turned upside down use a paper towel or cloth moistened with water and try to wipe off the top of the keyboard. Let the keyboard sit upside down overnight to dry off. (Blowing the keyboard with a blow-dryer can quicken the drying process)

Note: Purchasing a keyboard cover or protector will protect your keyboard from dust and any unexpected spills that may occur.
