I often feel there are many similarities between music and the work I do on a computer. One such similarity is my concern over the tools I use. I figure if you’re going to use something often, you should take the time to really play around with your options, and get the best out there, because the difference in price can be surprisingly negligible.

Having spent time both working on computers and making music without having a lot of money to spare, I’ve often settled—and gotten quite comfortable—with subpar gear. My first computer was an Atari 400, a computer which had a “membrane keyboard” which was basically like typing on an iPad, but worse. My first musical keyboard was no better.

In fact, when I think about it, even the gear I’m using now feels rather anemic. Modern Apple keyboards or HP Laptop Keyboard are fashionable and functional, but force your fingers to do all the work. They’re like these small keyboards that only cover half the range of a piano, and have a flat feeling, leaving you wondering when you’ve actually struck the note.

There are clearly things missing from these keyboards… namely, keys.

So the “pro” option, for most folks, is to get one with all the keys.

But there’s still something missing. They don’t feel right. Luckily, this is a solved problem, and has been for some time. The “holy grail” of keyboards like the  HP Pavilion DV6-6000 Keyboard  .

Now I can’t speak to the piano—I might need a bigger house—but you can buy piano-like keyboards to get a similar feel. As for the computer keyboard, the Model M Keyboard was manufactured for many years, and can be readily found on eBay. Since they’re so durable, it’s probably still a fairly good investment.

Well, this is annoying… my MacBook keyboard has started to go flaky, with several keys no longer working… the “” key, the “” key, and the “” key. Don’t see them? Dooh! I can’t type them, silly!

One of the regrettable side effects of Apple’s exceedingly-compact, dense designs is that repair/replacement of parts can be “challenging”, to phrase it kindly, and the keyboard is a good example: a key is “repaired” by disassembling almost the entire main body and replacing the whole keyboard assembly.

I’ve got the “AppleCare” extended warranty so I can get it fixed plenty easily, nevertheless still a hassle, especially since the problem appeared at the start of a three-day weekend. (Monday is the “Respect for the Aged” holiday in Japan.) The day after that, I’ll take the laptop to the repair place and hope it’s something they can do on site, knowing I’ll probably lose the laptop for a week or more.

So, we’ll probably see zero posts on my blog for a while, except that perhaps this will be motivation for me to finally clean my office desk to the point that I can access my MacPro (my desktop Mac). These days, I normally do all my work with my laptop while reclining in a big soft La-Z-Boy, so my desk has grown to be a vast wasteland of random debris piled in layers over time. If I clean, I’ll be astonished if I don’t find a fossil or two.

I will soothe the pain this evening by (yet again) drowning myself in beef and beer at the great BBQ/Beer garden feast at the hotel next to the (oddly-named) Qanat Mall, as I’ve written of several times.

PS: if my prose on this post seems a bit stilted this time, it’s owing to the fact that I can’t type the letter “” (again, I can’t type it!), so I’ve had to find alternative ways to phrase things. Which letter? That’s for the reader to decipher. Here’s a hint: this post has every letter except the one I can’t type.

Here’s another hint: to write this post while avoiding the letter that my keyboard rejects, I had to often refer to my thesars.

External Laptop Keyboard

My young brother has bought a new computer keyboard for his laptop. At the first, I was confused why he got an extra keyboard. Later, I had the answer. For he works in the campus office, and his laptop always stay at the office. But he types a lot. That made his dell 6000 Keyboard out of burden. Some keys switched to retirement. Then he chose to get an external keyboard. On the one side, it can save certain money. On the other hand, external keyboard is stable than the one itself.

Once you work in a fixed location with your notebook computer like home, office or other place, its better to have an external laptop keyboard. Usually, desktop requires an external one to prolong the time of our laptop, while, an external keyboard is a good way to save money for a broken laptop keyboard.

To have a look of the priceof Compaq NX6115 Keyboard, Gateway 8011381R Keyboard, and HP 441541-001 Keyboard, its obvious that they are more than 50 dollars and even higher of the original one. What if it got broken again? Every time I type on the keyboard, I am too sensitive to hit strongly. As to the computer keyboard, I have no such worry. Then how to select an external laptop keyboard? USB interface is essential as far as my concern. Generally, the USB interface can be seen on the side of laptop. And its easy to set keyboard with a USB interface. The current keyboard products are not all are used USB interface. There are a large number of PS/2 interface computer keyboards.

So we should make it clear while we buy an external keyboard. Second, the size of laptop keyboard should be taken into account. The exact size can have a better sense while hit the keys. Not like compaq NX6105 Keyboard, its so vulnerable to play games.

Its not so difficult to select one for your notebook. And I have made my mind to get an external one to release my laptop keyboard. I will have a try and hope share more information with you later.

How to Replace a keyboard for Gateway Laptop Keyboard

Visit the Gateway support document website and locate the “User’s Guide” section of the listings for your laptop model. You should be able to locate either a “component replacement manual,” or a document focusing specifically on replacement of the Gateway Laptop Keyboard for that model (as different models of keyboards have slightly different methods of removing the keyboard.) You may also wish to check the FAQ’s in the support documents of your model, as they may also contain information on replacing the keyboard.

Power down your Gateway laptop and remove the battery. This will not only ensure that you don’t accidentally damage your laptop by powering it up while working on its components, but may also be necessary to reach the mounting screws for your laptop’s keyboard. Press the power button once after the battery has been removed to discharge any remaining electricity that the laptop may have stored.

Consult the support documents for your Gateway laptop model and find out where the keyboard mounting screws are located. There will most likely be between two and five screws, depending on the specific model of laptop that you own. You may be required to remove the keyboard bezel (the strip of plastic that runs along the top of the keyboard) in order to reach some or all of the screws; this can be done either by sliding the bezel off to the right of the laptop or by simply lifting it off once loosened (though you may need to use a coin or flat-head screwdriver to detach clips or pry the bezel out of its resting location.)

Remove the screws holding the Gateway Laptop Keyboard in place.

The screws will either be located on the bottom of the laptop (under the space that the battery occupies) or beneath the keyboard bezel. Put the screws in a safe place where they will not be lost, since you will need to use them to secure the new keyboard.

Lift the keyboard up from the bottom, detaching the keyboard connector and pulling the keyboard itself free from the Gateway laptop, then setting it aside. You may need to once again use a coin or flat-head screwdriver in order to depress clips which might be holding the keyboard in place.)

Plug your new keyboard into the keyboard connector, then carefully place it back into the space previously occupied by your old Gateway Laptop Keyboard . If the keyboard is designed to be held in place by clips, press down with sufficient pressure to clip the keyboard into place.

Replace the screws that you had previously removed from the Gateway laptop. Make sure that the screws are firmly in place both to ensure that the keyboard is secure and also to eliminate any potential problems with replacing the bezel or battery.

Reattach the bezel (if you removed it) and the laptop battery, making sure that all components have been reattached and are firmly secured. Once the battery is back in place, press the power button to power up the Gateway laptop and give your operating system a chance to recognize the newly-installed keyboard.
