How to Diagnose a Dell E1705 Keyboard

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

The Dell Inspiron E1705 has an internal hardware troubleshooter called Dell Diagnostics. If you are having trouble with the notebook’s internal keyboard, running Dell Diagnostics is the best option to diagnose the problem. If the keyboard fails the Dell Diagnostics test, the program will display an error code and provide a solution to resolve the issue. If the keyboard passes the diagnostics test, check the keyboard itself for dirt or liquid, which can affect the performance of the device.

Instructions

    • 1

Restart the computer. Press “F12” when the boot screen appears. Use the arrow pad to go to “Diagnostics.” Press “Enter.”

    • 2

Follow the on-screen steps to complete the Pre-Boot System Assessment. Press “Y” to continue to the next test if an error occurs. Write down the error codes that appear and look up an explanation of the codes on Dell Support.

    • 3

Press any key when prompted. Click the “Custom Test” option. Double-click “Keyboard” to run a diagnostics test on the keyboard.

    • 4

Follow the on-screen directions to complete the test. You must be at the computer to complete the diagnostic test, as you’ll need to press each key on the Dell E1705 to check the keyboard for problems.

    • 5

Read the results to find out if there is a problem with the Dell Inspiron E1705 keyboard. Check the error code on the Dell Support page for an explanation of the error.

    • 6

Turn off the computer and check for residue underneath the keycaps. To remove a keycap, pull up on one edge of the key until a “snap” is heard. Pull up on the other edge of the key to remove it from the keyboard. If there is debris or dried-on liquid beneath the keycaps, clean the keyboard with a cotton swab dabbed in rubbing alcohol.

    • 7

Push the keycap back down on to the keyboard to snap it in place.

How to Unlock a Dell Keyboard

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

A keyboard is required for most activities on your Dell computer, and sometimes this keyboard can lock up. There are many possible causes for such a keyboard problem: an insufficient amount of memory, viruses, frozen programs and accidental key combinations are just a few. Unlocking your Dell keyboard is usually a simple procedure that can be done by computer users of all levels.

Instructions

    • 1

If you are using a wireless keyboard, install fresh batteries (usually AA or AAA) to see whether this resolves the problem.

    • 2

Check to be sure your “Num Lock” or “Scroll Lock” keys aren’t lit. These can lock out certain parts of your keyboard. If either of these indicator lights is lit, press the respective key to release it. These can typically be found at the top right on a laptop and between the number pad and main keys on a desktop keyboard.

    • 3

Save all open programs using your mouse, then use your mouse to restart your computer. This will only work if your computer isn’t frozen. If your mouse doesn’t move, press the power button on your Dell until the computer turns off. Wait 15 seconds, then press the power button again to restart. If the issue was lack of memory or a locked program, this will unlock your keyboard.

    • 4

If the keyboard is still locked after a restart, shut down your computer using your mouse or power button. Don’t restart. Unplug your Dell computer.

    • 5

Remove the battery if you’re using a laptop by turning the laptop over and sliding the battery release latch. Slide the battery out and replace after one minute.
For desktops, disconnect the keyboard from the desktop. Reconnect after one or two minutes.

    • 6

Reconnect the power adapter or AC cord. Start your computer.

    • 7

If your keyboard is still locked on a Dell desktop, disconnect the keyboard. Restart your computer and reconnect the keyboard after the system boots. Allow your operating system to recognize and reinstall the keyboard.
